Ōrākei street sign project

These street signs play an integral part in the representation of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei as mana whenua in Tāmaki Makaurau and are permanent yet subtle portrayals of our presence within the city.

There are 26 street names in total which are divided into 3 groups. The ‘Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei’ street names are predominantly names of Rangatira, Tupuna and/or places of high regard to NWO. The ‘Significant Māori Street Names’ include names that are not specific to Ngāti Whātua, but have become important to many in the Orākei community. “Ngā Waka” represents the five street signs in Orākei that are named after ancestral canoes of Aotearoa.
