"Kia rere arorangi te kāhu pōkere ki ngā taumata tiketike"
‘To soar and fly to the highest heavens’

Ngāti Whātua are an indigenous people of New Zealand. We are a hapū of the wider Ngāti Whātua iwi located in and around the Tāmaki isthmus and New Zealand's largest city, Auckland. We have a rich history in Tāmaki Makaurau dating back to the very beginnings of human Māori migration from Hawaiiki. This is our home.

Our organisation has been created to represent the hapū’s collective interest, to improve and advance the economic, social, environmental and cultural aspirations of our whānau and to work with our clients – resulting in experiences that engage, inspire and delight.

Our dream is that Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei enjoy superb physical, emotional, spiritual and mental wellbeing. The goal is that Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei successfully targets resources to meet the needs and aspirations of whānau.

Developing peoples’ capabilities and capacities now and into the future is the focus for people development. A large part of our strategy is about increasing the education qualification levels of the hapu, giving them greater access to increase health, wealth and wellbeing, We will also accelerate the leadership potentials amongst a number of our whanau and increase the skills of others making them more highly effective for the hapu and the nation at large. These skills will be a range of cultural, employment and social skills complementing increased educational qualifications to support our hapu.

Today, we number over 5,000 people who are scattered throughout the world.

However, our home-fires are centred around the Ōrākei Marae, a mere 10 minutes from the central business district of Auckland.

Ngāti Whātua’s occupation in Tāmaki Makaurau began in the 17th century when Te Tāōū, a hapu (sub-tribe) of Ngāti Whātua campaigned against Waiohua, the former proprietors of Tāmaki Makaurau.

This was under the principal leadership of Tuperiri. Tuperiri remained, consolidating Ngāti Whātua in Tāmaki Makaurau.

As such, every member of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei can trace their whakapapa (genealogy) to Tuperiri and are descended from the 3 hapu (sub-tribes): Te Tāōū, Ngāoho and Te Uringutu, collectively referred to as Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei. Today, the collective affairs of the sub-tribe are looked after by the Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Trust.
