Grants to support ngā uri ō Tuperiri from ECE to Tertiary

Jump to section

The foundations of ‘Ngā Oha’ is to work alongside our uri across the world, supporting them to reach excellence in whatever path they choose to follow.

Our hope is that, when the time comes, our uri will return to their communities to share their skills with our whānau.

Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei will process all applications, Māori Education Trust will distribute payments on behalf of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei. In some cases, this may increase the time it takes for Oha to show in your bank account. Please be patient as we work to get your Oha to you as soon as possible.

Established in 1961, the Māori Education Trust encourages Māori to pursue further education. They have done this through scholarships and grants to Māori across Aotearoa.

Advancing the educational aspirations of Māori are a shared vision for both Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei and the Māori Education Trust. This year, the Māori Education Trust are supporting Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei tauira in secondary and Tertiary studies by contributing to their Oha Mātauranga.

Tūāriki

Tūāriki

Tūāriki is a co-investment opportunity for whānau with pēpi enrolled or who intend to enrol their tamaiti into Māori-Medium ECE learning. Tūāriki closed for 2023.

FAQ

  • Tūāriki is a co-investment opportunity for whānau with pēpi enrolled or who intend to enrol their tamaiti into Māori-Medium ECE learning.

The purpose of Tūāriki is to promote pēpi into early learning at a younger age while also promoting reo Māori acquisition. Below are the objectives of Tūāriki:

    1. Tūāriki support NWŌ pēpi to access quality Māōri-Medium ECE Centre to grow a solid foundation to promote their education journey.
    2. Tuāriki will co-invest with whānau into the learning journeys of their tamaiti who are enrolled in a Māōri-Medium ECE centre by supporting with 50-75% of the total fees for the tamaiti (varying factors will impact the total co-investment from Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei – you can read this in the table below).
    3. Tūāriki will encourage whānau to grow their reo capability

    .

    • Recipient must be enrolled in a Ministry of Education registered Māori-Medium ECE Centre – this includes Puna Reo and Kohanga Reo.
    • Recipeint must maintain a minimum of 80% attendance to remain eligible.
    • Parents/Caregivers must complete regular surveys and updates when required.
    • Remaining fees must be covered by the parents/caregivers of the recipient.
    • Must not have received an Oha Mātauranga for the respective year of Tūāriki application – if you have received an Oha Mātauranga, you are unable to apply for Tūāriki Co-Investment.
  • You don’t need to submit any documents. We will reach out to your Māori Medium ECE to confirm your enrollment. They will need to supply regular invoices to Whai Māia to cover the Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei portion of the co-investment. You will need to cover your portion of the co-investment.

  • The co-investment models differ dependent on the age of pēpi and the total hours enrolled. An example of how the co-investment model works is below.

    Pēpi Under 2 Years

If a child attends for 20 hours, NWO would fund 15 hours, the whānau would fund 5 hours.

If a child attends for 30 hours, NWO would fund 22.5 hours, the whānau would fund 7.5 hours.

If a child attends for 40 hours, NWO would fund 30 hours, the whānau would fund 10 hours.

If a child attends for 50 hours, NWO would fund 37.5 hours, the whānau would fund 12.5 hours.

    Pēpi Over 3 Years

If a child attends for 20 hours, the child would be entitled to 20 hours ECE from the Ministry of Education.

If a child attends for 30 hours, NWO would fund 5 hours, the whānau would fund 5 hours.

If a child attends for 40 hours, NWO would fund 10 hours, the whānau would fund 10 hours.

If a child attends for 50 hours, NWO would fund 15 hours, the whānau would fund 15 hours.
