    Poumatua is a new festival celebrating the birth of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland and the vision of Ngāti Whātua rangatira Apihai Te Kawau, whose tuku whenua helped establish the city.

    This September marks 186 years since Apihai Te Kawau allocated 3,000 acres of land to Governor Hobson to create a place where people could live, trade and build a future together.

    Poumatua brings that story into the heart of the city through kapa haka, kōrero, kai, creativity and whānau experiences.

    Across three days, Aucklanders are invited to come together to celebrate the history of Tāmaki Makaurau, experience Māori culture and look ahead to the future of the city we share.

    At the heart of the festival is an aspiration for 18 September to one day be recognised as the true anniversary of the birth of Auckland.

  • Te Kahu Tōpuni Kapa Haka Festival

    A vibrant celebration of tamariki, culture and identity, the Te Kahu Tōpuni Kapa Haka Festival brings together primary schools from across Auckland in a joyful, non-competitive showcase of kapa haka.

  • Tuku Iho | Golden Years of Kapa Haka

    Experience the timeless excellence of Māori performing arts as four legendary kapa haka groups Waihīrere, Te Waka Huia, Ngāti Rangiwewehi, Te Rōpū Manutaki and special guests, Auckland Anglican Māori Club unite for one unforgettable day.

    Opened by tangata whenua Ngāti Whātua ki Tāmaki, the morning will also acknowledge the composers, tutors, leaders and kaihaka whose contributions continue to influence generations today.

    Inspired by TED Talks and M9, Tuku Kōrero | Tāmaki Talks brings together influential leaders and emerging rangatahi voices to explore identity, belonging and Auckland’s future.

  • Tuku Whenua

    At the heart of Poumatua is Tuku Whenua, a special Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei whānau gathering marking 186 years since the tuku whenua of Apihai Te Kawau.

    Held on 18 September, this kaupapa returns to the story that sits at the centre of the festival: the allocation of whenua, the generosity and vision behind it, and what that moment continues to mean for Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei and Tāmaki Makaurau today.
