Hakihea 2020

The final Te Matakahi wānanga last year took place at Arapoua, at Waihaua marae. Te Matakahi climbed Tokatoka, the central ancestral mountain of Ngāti Whatua, and felt the wairua of that pā tūwatawata. It was demonstrated through the haka of our people and was proverbialized with the saying, “Tokatoka, the plug of the tides.” From this lofty mountain top, they observed significant landmarks of Ngāti Whātua including Maunganui, Tūtamoe, Motuwhītiki, Maungaraho, Te Wairoa and heard some kōrero about various ancestors of that time.

Greetings to all the speakers of Ngāti Whātua who attended our awesome zoom on Wednesday. Even though we had some challenges, thanks to our technology, we were able to meet and discuss a number of interesting aspects regarding whaikōrero.

Tuia Te Hono is a space designed to strengthen our men as orators. To enter this space, they must speak Maori, holdfast to this kaupapa and is two years in duration. Tuia Te Hono meets on the first Wednesday of every month from 6-11pm.

Ka whakaakonga ngā tāne me pēhea te taki tauparapara, karakia, poroporoaki, tuitui whakaaro, te whakatakoto whakaaro, te pōhiri i te manuhiri, te whakautu i te tangata whenua, te manaaki i te kaupapa o te wā. Ka mutu a Tuia Te Hono hei te pito o tēnei tau.

These men learn how to lead, deliver incantations, farewell, weave thoughts, place thoughts, welcome guests, greet hosts and how to support kaupapa. This intake ends at the end of this year.

I tū he pōhiri hukihuki if te Hakihea. Ahakoa e rima marama noa iho, ko Tuia Te Hono e tū ana!!

December saw a practice pōhiri undertaken. Although the students had only been together for five months, Tuia Te Hono rose to the occasion. I was amazed at the calibre of every kaikōrero. I am completely excited at the growth and development that this year holds.

    More coming soon…
